Highpoint International Hotel is unusual on the Gladstone shortlist for explicitly framing itself around the wider region's natural drawcards, the Great Barrier Reef and nearby islands offshore, national parks and hinterlands inland, rather than purely the city itself. One-bedroom apartments with a kitchen, oven, microwave and washing machine suit longer, more independent stays, and many come with private balcony views over the surrounding cityscape. The outdoor pool and barbecue terrace cover downtime between excursions, and the restaurant on site means dinner does not always require heading out.
