Our take
Mercure Warragul opened in 2015 on Mason Street, about 100 m from Warragul station, and it is the best-rated of the three Warragul hotels we list: 8.6 from 863 reviews, against 8.1 for Comfort Inn & Suites and 7.4 for the Club Hotel. Its 47 rooms come in five types, from the 25 m² Superior King to the 30 m² Privilege King and a two-bedroom Superior Apartment of 55 m² for four. I would book it to arrive by V/Line without a car, or as a base for Walhalla and Mt Baw Baw. I would not book it for a spa break: apart from the rooms with a spa bath and a gym, there is no spa, pool or sauna.
- ✓Come by train: V/Line runs at least hourly from Southern Cross to Warragul, about 1 hour 40 minutes, and the hotel is about a minute's walk from the platform.
- ✓Check V/Line service changes before an evening trip, as coaches have replaced Gippsland line trains during maintenance works, adding up to an hour.
- ✓For Mt Baw Baw in the snow season, hire chains at Icy Creek or Tanjil Bren before the winding mountain road, not in Warragul.

The Superior with two queen beds also takes four, but at 27 m² it is one tight room. The Newmason restaurant downstairs serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with wood-fired pizzas and an outdoor terrace, so nobody has to drive after a day out. There is no pool or playground, which matters with young children on a hot day. I would base a family here for a weekend of Walhalla's gold-mining town and the Baw Baw plateau, not for a week.
