Family Accommodation on the Gold Coast: Where to Stay
For a Gold Coast family holiday, stay in a self-contained apartment with a pool and pick the strip by your children's ages: Broadbeach or Main Beach for the light rail and patrolled surf, Burleigh, Palm Beach or Coolangatta on the southern Gold Coast for calmer creeks and sheltered bays. The 26 family stays on this page average 9.0 out of 10 across 19,765 guest reviews, and most of them are apartment towers with kitchens and laundries rather than hotel rooms. That matters more than it sounds: with toddlers, a separate bedroom and a washing machine beat a buffet breakfast. Below, I sort every one of them by area, say who each suits, and flag the traps, from Schoolies week to the drive to Dreamworld.
A holiday city built for families on the move: high-rise apartments with kitchens and pools, a tram a block or two behind the beach, patrolled surf every few kilometres, and calm creeks and the Broadwater for the littlest swimmers.
Which Gold Coast area suits your family
The Gold Coast is a long line of patrolled surf beaches backed by apartment towers, the Nerang River and the sheltered Broadwater, with the big theme parks 20 to 30 minutes north of Surfers Paradise. Where you sleep decides whether a family day is a walk to the sand, a tram ride or a car trip.
Southport and the Broadwater suit toddlers best of all the northern suburbs. The water is a sheltered estuary, not open surf, and Broadwater Parklands has the Rockpools, a free water-play area with jets, fountains and a shallow creek for children up to about eight, watched by lifeguards. Meriton Suites Southport, the most reviewed stay on this page with 5,422 reviews, has one- to three-bedroom suites above the light rail. Silvershore Apartments on the Broadwater and Allisee Apartments at Hollywell, rated 9.7 on 37 reviews, face the Broadwater rather than the ocean, which is exactly why parents of small swimmers choose them.
For families who want the pool itself to be the day out, Main Beach and Surfers Paradise have the strongest options. JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa has a saltwater lagoon with an artificial reef and tropical fish you can snorkel, plus a freshwater pool with a slide, both temperature-controlled all year. Marriott Vacation Club at Surfers Paradise adds a waterslide and kitchenettes. Oscar On Main Beach Resort has both an indoor and an outdoor pool, which earns its keep on cooler July evenings, when an unheated outdoor pool is far less tempting for small children.
If you would rather step straight onto patrolled sand, five apartment buildings between Main Beach and Surfers Paradise face the surf: Golden Sands on the Beach, Narrowneck Court Holiday Apartments, Norfolk Luxury Beachfront Apartments, Pacific Plaza Apartments and Viscount on the Beach. All of them are self-contained, which is the point with children: breakfast on the balcony, the beach before it fills, lunch back at the apartment. The G:link tram runs parallel to the coast a block or two back from the beach, so the Rockpools in Southport and the Broadbeach beachfront are a short ride away without moving the car.
Surfers Paradise itself is the loudest base, and I would think twice in late November. Gold Coast Schoolies Week runs from 21 to 27 November 2026, with the official Safer Schoolies hub on Surfers Paradise Beach every night. Families still sleep well a little further out. Surfers Chalet is a two-minute walk from the beach, Ocean View Studio Apartment Surfers Paradise suits a couple with one small child, and LOTUS RESORT sits back from the ocean near Budds Beach, a calm river beach on the Nerang. Away from that week, Cavill Avenue, the beachfront and the tram make Surfers easy without a car.
Broadbeach is my default for first-timers with school-age children. It is quieter than Surfers at night, has Kurrawa Beach and its surf club, and the tram now runs south from here: the Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads extension opened on 9 August 2026, adding eight stations including Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach and Miami. Oceana On Broadbeach and ULTIQA Air On Broadbeach face the beach, Avani Broadbeach Residences is an eight-minute walk away, and The Darling at The Star, rated 9.4, is the rare true hotel in Broadbeach. Albatross North Apartments on Mermaid Beach and Xanadu Resort, 200 metres from the sand, complete the middle strip.
The southern Gold Coast is where I send families with babies and preschoolers. Tallebudgera Creek, between Burleigh and Palm Beach, is one of the few flat-water beaches on the coast, with a playground at its surf club; Currumbin Creek offers the same calm estuary, about a kilometre from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Solnamara Beachfront Apartments and Burleigh Esplanade Apartments are in Burleigh Heads, Sea Mist Palms in Palm Beach. At the border, Mantra Coolangatta Beach overlooks Kirra, Greenmount and Rainbow Bay, and Bila Vista Kirra Beachside Apartments sits steps from North Kirra Beach near Gold Coast Airport, handy with tired children after a flight.
A traveler's takeWith children under five, I would book the southern Gold Coast, around Burleigh or Palm Beach, and spend the mornings at Tallebudgera Creek rather than in the surf. With children aged six to twelve who want theme parks, I would take Broadbeach or Main Beach, because Dreamworld and Movie World are 20 to 30 minutes' drive north and the tram covers the beach days. I would avoid Surfers Paradise during Schoolies week in late November, and I would not choose Quest Robina for a beach holiday: it is an inland apartment hotel with a heated pool, better for visiting family or a stopover than for walking to the sand. The JW Marriott suits families who want the pool to be the attraction.

Local tips
- 1Swim between the red and yellow flags only: the Gold Coast's ocean beaches have strong rips, and with young children the calm-water creeks at Tallebudgera and Currumbin are the safer first swim.
- 2Stay near the G:link if you will not hire a car: since 9 August 2026 the tram runs from Helensvale to Burleigh Heads, so Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach and Burleigh are now car-free bases.
- 3Avoid Surfers Paradise from 21 to 27 November 2026: Gold Coast Schoolies Week fills the beachfront with school leavers every night, and the official hub sits on Surfers Paradise Beach.
- 4Plan theme park days by the drive: Dreamworld at Coomera and Warner Bros. Movie World at Oxenford are 20 to 30 minutes north of Surfers Paradise, so a Broadbeach or Main Beach base keeps the trip short.
- 5Take preschoolers to the Rockpools at Broadwater Parklands in Southport: it is a free water-play area with fountains and a shallow creek, staffed by lifeguards, and a short walk from Meriton Suites Southport.
- 6Ask for a Broadwater-facing apartment at Silvershore or Allisee if your children are small: you look over sheltered water rather than open surf, and the shoreline parks have playgrounds and picnic spots.
- 7Book a stay with an indoor or heated pool for a July visit: Gold Coast winter days are mild, but evenings cool down, and Oscar On Main Beach Resort has both an indoor and an outdoor pool.
- 8Choose Bila Vista Kirra or Mantra Coolangatta Beach for a late arrival: both are on the southern end near Gold Coast Airport, which spares tired children a long transfer north.
- 9If you fly into Brisbane, Airtrain runs from Brisbane Airport down the Gold Coast line to Helensvale, where you change to the G:link tram on the same ticket, so a stay near the tram needs no hire car.
- 10If your dates are flexible, avoid the Queensland state school summer holidays, from 12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027, when the state's own families are on holiday along the coast as well.
